5 SEO Mistakes Costing You Clients (Each Fixable in 20 Minutes)
Editorial Series | SEO | 5 SEO Mistakes Costing You Clients (Each Fixable in 20 Minutes)
A B0LD Guide
Most SEO advice is either overwhelming or useless — a 40-point audit nobody finishes, or vague encouragement to "optimize your content." Here are five specific, common mistakes, each with a fix you can genuinely complete in the next twenty minutes.
1. Missing or generic meta descriptions
The meta description is the preview text under your link in search results, and if you haven't written one, Google is choosing a random sentence from your page instead — usually the wrong one. Fix: write one or two honest sentences describing what the page actually delivers, under 155 characters, for your five most important pages. Twenty minutes, five pages, done.
2. No internal linking between related pages
If your pages don't link to each other, you're asking Google — and your reader — to find your best content by accident. Fix: pick your three strongest pages and add two internal links from other relevant pages pointing to each. This single change helps search engines understand what you consider important, which is most of what internal linking is for.
3. Images with no alt text and no compression
Slow-loading, unlabeled images cost you on two fronts: search engines can't read what they show, and slow pages get penalized in ranking. Fix: run your homepage images through a free compressor, and add a short, accurate description to each image's alt text field. Both take minutes once you know where the settings live.
4. No clear header hierarchy
A page with no H1, or five H2s doing the job of one, reads as disorganized to both a search engine and a human skimming it. Fix: make sure every page has exactly one H1 that states what the page is about, and that your H2s break the content into genuinely distinct sections, not just visual breaks.
5. Writing for the wrong search intent
The most common invisible mistake: writing a beautiful page for "brand positioning" when the actual searcher wants "brand positioning statement template" — a completely different intent needing a completely different page. Fix: before writing anything new, search the exact phrase you're targeting and look at what's already ranking. If it's all templates and yours is a philosophy essay, you're answering a question nobody asked.
